Defence Interns Study Trip to Special Tribunal for Lebanon

On 10 June 2016, ADC-ICTY interns visited the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Presentations were given by the Office of the Prosecution, the Registry, Chambers and Defence. In depth explanations were given about trial in absentia. The Defence was represented by Deirdre Montgomery, a former ICTY defence staff member, and Marie-Pier Barbeau, an Associate Legal Officer. Their presentation was particularly interesting to the participants because they provided a personal background on their careers in The Hague. Unlike the ICTY, the Defence is an official organ of the STL. This allows them access to the budgetary meetings and to have a stronger voice in the proceedings and structure of the Tribunal.
