ADC-ICT Files Request to Appear as Amicus Curiae in Nzuwonemeye Case at UN IRMCT

September 10, 2018

On 10 September 2018, the ADC-ICT filed a request to appear as amicus curiae in the case of Francois-Xavier Nzuwonemeye at the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT). Mr. Nzuwonemeye was acquitted at the International Tribunal fro Rwanda (ICTR) in 2014.

Mr. Nzuwonemeye was released from the custody of the ICTR but remains stranded in Arusha, Tanzania as he is unable to return to Rwanda and France has not permitted him relocation to reunite with his family who live there.

This is a situation which affects a number of individuals who were either acquitted by the ICTR or have served their sentences and have been released. A number of countries have refused to permit these individuals to join their families. The ADC-ICT previously sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General and Security Council regarding the issue.

The ADC-ICT believes that it could offer assistance to the IRMCT when deciding whether to issue an order to France regarding the relocation of Mr. Nzuwonemeye.

The full request to appear as amicus curiae is available here
